$10.00$20.00

APRIL 2017 UPDATE: Have 40+ cultivars, and dozens of closely related species, but for Spring only a handful of types are listed for now. Many new types and bulk options coming later in the year… All quantities are verified in stock and in good form. All the Dragon Fruit pages now merged into this one to streamline things. Cuttings are usually about 8″ but can range from 6-14″ depending on availability and to ensure no delays.

Dragon Fruit (Pitahaya) are one of the more unique of the exotic tropical fruit world being the product of vine-like epiphytic cactus. Being of the cactus world they can easily propagated into perfect clones with the hardiness of cacti making them great for shipping. They are actually jungle plants and prefer potting soils and moisture typical of other fruiting tress, and have the unique feature of being able to grow up existing trees that otherwise wouldn’t bear fruit. The ‘proper’ dragon fruits are mainly born of the two species White (Hylocereus undatus) & Red (Hylocereus costaricensis), with many pink-purple hybrids between the two along with hybrid-ability with the Yellow ‘Pitaya’ (Hylocereus megalanthus) type as well as many other exciting close & semi-close relatives. The cactus itself is also popular grafting stock for many other ornamental cacti.

NEW SHIPPING UPGRADE OPTION:
Get the best selections with minimal trimmings in an oversized box! A lot of stuff outgrows the usual intended sizes of about 10″ in height/length important to maintaining the Unlimited Combined Shipping for $6 model, and these are usually dumped off to local customers or they go through a lot of trimming. If you see this then this is one of those species and if you upgrade you’ll get far better stock than otherwise.

Int’l Orders: Should only order cuttings, no roots.

All materials are from aged flowering stock. We don’t sell Dragon Fruit by generic “white” or “pink” naming, which is akin to selling orange trees as “Orange Trees” without any cultivar names (Valencia, Navel, etc). Not all Pitaya cultivars are self-fertile, so it’s always best to grow several varieties nearby each other.

Dragon Fruit plants hail from the cactus family, Cactaceae, originated in North, Central, and South America. They are widely distributed, from coastal areas, to high mountains, and in tropical rainforests. Their appearance is just as variable, from thimble-size species, to enormous column species, and the epiphytic (climbing) species. Since pre-Columbian times, pitayas have been very common in their native countries where they are consumed by the general population. Recently, pitayas are being traded in international markets and have become the most important export fruit of Viet Nam. Demand will increase for many years as this delicious fruit becomes better known in other markets.

American beauty AKA Bien Hoa Red:

“Halley’s Comet” Pink Dragon Fruit:
This variety is a hybrid of a red fleshed and a white fleshed fruit. The result is a remarkably delicious variety that is both showy inside and out. The fruit is large, ranging in size from 0.75-1.5 lbs., and occurs without cross or hand pollination. This variety is certainly worthy of attention by commercial growers and home owners alike.

“Physical Graffiti” Pink Dragon Fruit:
This variety is a hybrid of a red fleshed and a white fleshed fruit. The result is a remarkably delicious variety that is both showy inside and out. The fruit is large, ranging in size from 0.75-1.5 lbs., and occurs without cross or hand pollination. This variety is certainly worthy of attention by commercial growers and home owners alike.

“Seminole” White Dragon Fruit:
The source specimen is a Florida naturalized specimen that appeared spontaneously here in Seminole Heights, FL (33604). It was spotted taking over and pulling down in impressive section of a home owner’s privacy fence. He didn’t think it was Dragon Fruit, and said it began growing all on its own there about 5 or 6 years ago. This stock is ideal material for Florida’s Zone 9B type climate and soils.

“Vietnamese Jaina” White Dragon Fruit:
A popular named cultivar. The only fruits we’ve found in stores have been white, and we suspect are they’re mostly all from this popular variety. It’s a rare day scouring every market in the city that one of these fruits can be had for $4 or less.
