Help preserve this threatened Florida native fruit bearing cactus!

Acanthocereus tetragonus is a species of cactus that is native to southern Florida and the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas in the United States, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, and northern South America. Common names include Night-blooming Cereus, Barbed-wire Cactus, Sword Pear, Dildo Cactus, Triangle Cactus, and Órgano-alado de Pitaya (Spanish).

Sword Pear is like a stout & upright monstrosity form of Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus spp.). This stock has short stiff spines (much different than most of the long-spined examples that come up in Google Images). The spines don’t exhibit any tendancy to break off, making the plant even easier to handle, while the fruit bear no prickly spines. With fruit much larger than Opuntia “Tuna” Prickly Pear, this “Orange Enigma” is an ideal candidate for commercial use.

Young stems of the Barbed-wire Cactus can be eaten as a vegetable either cooked or raw, while the fruits are edible and sweet. It is sometimes cultivated as an ornamental. The Fairy Castle Cactus, a miniature cultivar of this species, has many curved branches that resemble the turrets of a castle.

SEEDS: Wont be available until later this season…

CUTTINGS: Cuttings are tip pieces from mature fruiting stock, grown here in Zone 9B/10 33604 USA. Cuttings are either 3-7″ mini-pups (typically rooted), or 12″+ solid thick stock. Mini-pup examples are pictured in the cut out milk carton. By all measures these are from the same aged stock as the large cuttings and should grow large and flower in short time. These are mainly being offered as an economical solution for int’l buyers, their growth rate is shown between the two dated photos. Large cuttings are shown in the blue crate photo.

Product Description

Shrubs, clambering or arching-reclining, branched near base, sometimes with well-developed trunks. Stems dark green, growing to 200 cm per season; ribs from base to rib crest 3-5 cm, less than 1 cm thick. Spines abruptly thickened at base, extremely variable. Flowers 14-20 cm; flower tube 8-15 cm, ± tuberculate, areoles few, usually 1 spine per areole; outer tepals narrowly lanceolate to linear, 3.5-4 cm, apex acuminate; inner tepals broadly linear, 3.5-4.5 cm, apex acuminate; ovary with small scales and usually 3-5 diverging spines per areole. Fruits bright red, ovoid to oblong, 30-80(-100) mm, slightly tuberculate, shiny, edible, sweet. 2n = 22 [as A. pentagonus (Linnaeus) Britton & Rose].

Flowering mid summer-fall. Sandy soils of dense thickets, hammocks, bottomlands of coastal areas; 0-10 m; Fla., Tex.; Mexico; West Indies; Central America; n South America; introduced Pacific Islands (Hawaii). The Florida populations have been called Acanthocereus floridanus but now appear to be the northernmost variants of the highly variable species A. tetragonus, which occurs throughout the Caribbean region (D. R. Hunt 1991).

The common name “triangle cactus” refers to the mature stems in cross section; the epithet “tetragonus” alludes to the juvenile stems, which often have four angles.

Plant Germplasm (definition): Any portion of genetic material that can be grown into a live plant. Examples include seeds, stem cuttings (via many methods including air layering), root cuttings, root divisions (multiplication via division), leaf cuttings, leaf fragments (in tissue culture), rooted nodes (vines), “eyes” (offshoots from potato tubers), cacti pieces, etc. The term germplasm can also be used to describe a collection of genetic resources for an organism such as as a seed collection or, for trees, a nursery.
